A Year After Coming Home

Hi, in case you haven’t figured it out – I’m Mallory. And like many others, I love to travel.

A little over a year ago I decided to quit my job and buy a one-way ticket to Paris. I traveled to Europe for a few months and then came back home. In fact, this time last year I was in Iceland celebrating my birthday with about 20 strangers, with a ticket home on November 1.

If you’ve ever traveled alone, you’ve undoubtedly been called brave and adventurous. Then comes the “I wish I could do that” exclamation. If you’ve been gone for a few months, or more, I hardly need to mention the reverse culture shock. I’ve been back for a year, and I still feel a pang when I’m at the bar and want to step out of the bar and on to the street with my drink. If you have any advice for dealing with the flaws of American culture after being abroad, I’m all ears.

What I can offer you all is advice to satiate that need for adventure in your hometown. In my case, I happen to live in one of the greatest cities in the world – New York City. So that’s what I will share with you is how I deal with the insatiable travel bug and wanderlust at home. Well in my next post anyway – this is just my intro post. :p
Ah okay – I’ll give you one for now.
Remember to look up. When I was younger, I used to detest the slow walking tourists gawking at the various sites of New York. As I traveled, it became much more apparent just how coveted it is to live in a top travel destination. You don’t even need to look up, you can glance up and down the avenues and notice the iconic skyscrapers that make up the skyline. Best of all? It’s free to look at the buildings from anywhere that you can see them!
And go ahead, take a quick picture for Instagram or a Snap. I won’t judge you. Promise.
